Give a label a clear job

A useful label names what someone will find or what an action will do.

Choose the reader's words

A label such as Account details gives a clearer destination than a vague phrase such as More. Use a term the reader can recognise at the moment of choosing, and keep the same wording when that destination opens.

Describe a concrete result

An action label should say what happens next. Save draft and Send message describe different consequences. If two controls have different effects, their wording should help someone make that distinction before clicking.

Read neighbouring labels together

A set of labels needs to work as a group. Compare similar choices side by side and remove overlapping meanings. A label that seems clear alone may become confusing beside another that promises much the same thing.
